A Beginning…

Students Hiking in Pepperwood Preserve

There never seems to be enough time in class for everyone to have a voice. It’s disappointing to know that students are leaving for the day with so much to say, if only to clarify what they really think. My hope is that this blog will present a 24/7 opportunity for both emotion and intellect, insight and observation. Not bound by the convention of time, I want to share my thoughts on leadership, life’s joys and frustrations, spirituality and lessons learned. I want to share my lyrics and the meaning behind them. Eventually, I’d like to post some of my music once it is recorded. None of this means anything simply kept to myself. I share it with you, my students, family, friends, colleagues and fans of my music…for reflection. I value accolades, cynicism and brutal honesty alike.

As Alexander Supertramp (Chris McCandless) in Into the Wild finally realizes on the Stampede Trail in Alaska, you can’t truly experience happiness in isolation…it must be shared to bring true joy. It is a human absolute to seek these relationships, to be part of a pack. It is my desire to emote with those who will listen. For those of you who have ever wanted to walk into the wild, or for those who do everyday, this blog is to remind us to never stop seeking what brings us the greatest joy and moves the planet to a better place.

  1. ………….actually I will be going ‘Into the Wild’ tonite @ the Rialto! Today I took someone to lunch and it gave me such JOY inside to a smile come accross their face.

  2. Well Robert, I am home and in from the ‘wild’ – Santa Rosa and the Rialto! Quite an amazing film. Sean Penn did rather well I have to say. A deep and moving journey that ended before the end. I truly believe that he really wanted to cross the CREEK that was much bigger in the Spring than when he crossed it in the Winter after two years of being there and was, going home. Long periods of isolation can lead to loneliness and a sense of being afraid. I believe that you can feel good alone, but that you cannot have joy in your heart unless you can share your happiness and what it is that makes you feel good inside.

  3. I saw the movie, “Into the Wild,” I found it to be very moving, painful, and intense. He paid a big price to live his dream. How much are we willing to pay (attention, energy, money) when there is never a guarantee of what the outcome will be? We never know what life will bring when we make any decision or change, yet if we can be open for the experience then we can be open to be open. The process of the journey is rich. I have heard from some people that the book is better than the movie.
Changing the subject: What books have been the most impactful in everyone’s lives? In my own life there have been several: 1. “In Search of the Miraculous” by P.D. Ouspensky 2. “Collision With the Infinite” by Suzanne Segal 3. “The Legacy of Luna” by Julia Butterfly Hill 4. Martin Prechtel’s books – “Secrets of the Talking Jaguar” is his first one in the trilogy. “Long Life, Honey in the Heart” is his 2nd book in the trilogy. “Stealing Beneficio’s Roses” is his 3rd book in the trilogy. There are many other books as well that have been deeply impactful. So, there you have it! D.G.
